“There is a serene and settled
majesty to woodland scenery
that enters into the soul
and delights and elevates it,
and fills it with noble inclinations.”

Blithewold, Old English for “happy woodland,” is the name given to the Van Wickle summer home. With its Great Lawn and surrounding gardens, the 33-acre landscape was envisioned as a park with distinctive features, reflecting the family’s love of nature and ornamental horticulture. Rare and specimen trees were individually selected and located throughout the property to project a romantic, fresh and inspiring character • Photos and “Happy Woodland” haiku by Mary O’Connor
