Black is a misnomer

True to its name, this winterberry holly heralds the pending change of season with clusters of red berries. Commonly called black alder, its leaves turn black before dropping off. Its berries, however, brighten the landscape well into the winter months—assuming, that is, that the birds don’t get to them first.
