Crabby

“Worlds can be found

by a child and an adult

bending down and looking together

under the grass stems

or at the skittering crabs in a tidal pool.”

— Mary Catherine Bateson

“Worse, I have to admit to feeling the jealousy of one crab for another that has managed to climb out of the barrel.” — Richard Russo

With a scientific name (Callintectes sapidus) that translates as “Savory beautiful swimmer”, these prized ten-legged blue crabs are known for their sweet, tender meat as well as their sapphire-tinted claws. Their rear fifth pair of legs act like paddles, making them excellent and rapid swimmers.
