“Just smiling at someone walking down the street can make the person’s day. It’s all about paying it forward.” — Mariska Hargitay
To experience an example of what it means to make someone’s day, I only needed to step out my front doorway the other morning and encounter the surprise handiwork of nine-year-old neighbor friend Olivia. Stealthily working while I was away, she and her parents weeded, mulched and freshened my sad pretense of a garden, which, thanks to the summer’s heat and humidity, I had let get seriously out of hand.
It took a bit of sleuthing to figure out just who was behind this tiny oasis of love, but Olivia’s little stone heart signature served as a strong clue. It will remain there even when buried beneath winter’s snow, warming my days with kindness paid forward!
