When on the ground eating or resting, Canada geese typically position one or more birds near the edge of the flock as a sentry or guard.

As with many other fowl or animals that live in groups and are easy prey, adults will take turns guarding, making a low noise when they want to be relieved.

The system is especially important with protection of youngsters, or goslings.
